Listener: Non-Ownership

As a listener sometimes, we get caught up and take ownership of the talkers’ situations in which they are sharing. Once we get side tracked from active listening we forget that we do not own the speakers’ problems. By admitting that as listeners we do not own the talkers’ problems is not saying that we do not care about the talkers’ life challenges. As listeners we must set aside our put of views, fix-it mentality, and biases.
Suggestive Active Listening Technique
Try the Hem and Haw approach.
When you feel an urge to give advice, answer, or solution, call on Jesus, take several deep breathes. If need be place your hand over your mouth.
Remind ourselves we are practicing supportive listening skills.
If you have the urge to jump into the talker’s time, respond in away that let the listener know you heard what was spoken.
Always maintain good eye contact.
“He replied, “Blessed rather are those who hear the word of God and obey it” (Luke 11:28 NIV).
